About Amy
Hi! I’m Amy Hicks, and I’ve been an educator for nearly 20 years, working with elementary students in a variety of settings. My career began in Seattle Public Schools, where I taught 2nd and 3rd grades. After several years in the classroom, I pursued my Master of Education in Language, Literacy, and Culture at the University of Washington. It was during this time that I discovered my true passion: helping children unlock the joy of reading.

After completing my degree, I became a Literacy Interventionist, focusing on students who needed extra support in reading. My approach has always been to use evidence-based strategies that are engaging and effective, helping every child reach their fullest potential. I’ve also completed extensive training in the Wired for Reading curriculum, which emphasizes systematic, sequential phonics instruction.

My personal journey with literacy took on even deeper meaning when my son was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD. Experiencing this both as a parent and a teacher gave me new insights into the challenges many children face and strengthened my commitment to helping other families navigate similar paths.
My Teaching Philosophy
I believe that reading is a skill every child can master, but it’s crucial to meet them where they are and make the process enjoyable. Not every child is naturally drawn to books, but with the right approach, every child can become a fluent and confident reader.
My philosophy is rooted in making literacy instruction fun, engaging, and rewarding. I use a combination of explicit phonics, creative activities, and games to ensure that students enjoy their learning journey. I also integrate ADHD strategies into my practice, tailoring each session to fit the unique learning style of every student.

For me, teaching is about more than just imparting skills—it's about empowering students to believe in their abilities. I use a personalized approach that taps into each student’s strengths, helping them build the confidence they need to succeed in both literacy and beyond.
