About Amy
Hi! I’m Amy Hicks, and I’ve been an educator for nearly 20 years, working with elementary students in a variety of settings. My career began in Seattle Public Schools, where I taught 2nd and 3rd grades. After several years in the classroom, I earned my Master of Education in Language, Literacy, and Culture at the University of Washington. It was during this time that I discovered my true passion: helping children unlock the joy of reading.

Since then, I’ve worked as a Literacy Interventionist, focusing on students who need extra support in reading and writing. I use evidence-based strategies—backed by training in the Wired for Reading curriculum and the Science of Reading—to help children build real, lasting skills. Whether we’re working on phonics, fluency, comprehension, or spelling, I tailor each session to how your child learns best.

My work is also shaped by my experience as a parent. When my son was diagnosed with dyslexia and ADHD, it deepened my understanding of how challenging literacy can be—and how powerful the right support can feel. I know firsthand how confusing and overwhelming it can be to navigate school systems, referrals, and learning differences. That’s why I also support families, not just students.
My Teaching Philosophy
I believe that reading is a skill every child can master, but it’s crucial to meet them where they are and make the process enjoyable. Not every child is naturally drawn to books, but with the right approach, every child can become a fluent and confident reader.

My philosophy is rooted in making literacy instruction fun, engaging, and rewarding. I use a combination of explicit phonics, creative activities, and games to ensure that students enjoy their learning journey. I also integrate ADHD strategies into my practice, tailoring each session to fit the unique learning style of every student.

For me, teaching is about more than just imparting skills—it's about empowering students to believe in their abilities. I use a personalized approach that taps into each student’s strengths, helping them build the confidence they need to succeed in both literacy and beyond.

In my practice, I aim to help every student become an empowered learner, confident in their ability to tackle challenges and take control of their education.
